The NTSB has recovered the cockpit voice and flight data recorders from an American Airlines CRJ700 plane involved in a midair collision with an Army helicopter near Reagan National Airport. The crash, which occurred Wednesday night, claimed 67 lives, including 64 passengers and three soldiers, as both aircraft fell into the Potomac River.
NTSB Chair Jennifer Homendy assured the public of a thorough investigation, with a preliminary report expected in 30 days. Both crews were experienced and followed standard flight paths. Authorities have transitioned from rescue to recovery operations after pulling 28 bodies from the water early Thursday.
This marks the deadliest U.S. aviation accident since 2009. Investigators are now analyzing the recorders to determine the cause.
