Americans’ political ideologies remained steady in 2024, with 37% identifying as conservative, 34% as moderate, and 25% as liberal.
However, Republicans and Democrats reached record highs in ideological extremes, with 77% of Republicans identifying as conservative and 55% of Democrats as liberal.
Moderate identification has declined since the 1990s, while liberal identification has steadily risen. Independents continue to favor a moderate stance, with 30% conservative and 20% liberal.
The growing polarization has resulted in less bipartisan cooperation and increased challenges in passing party-driven legislation.
