Convicted killer sentenced for separate kidnapping attempt

A man already serving a life sentence for torture and murder has been sentenced to an additional 20 years for attempted kidnapping.

Eddie Marte was convicted for holding an Elmira man for ransom in April 2021 alongside accomplice Malik Weems.

The victim was held for over 12 hours inside a South Main Street residence. Marte had pleaded guilty to the charge in September 2024.

His life sentence stems from the January 2021 torture and killing of 38-year-old Juan Jose Gotay.
