Cicadas from Brood XIV to emerge in New York

  • / Updated:
  • Staff Report

This spring, Brood XIV cicadas will emerge after 17 years underground, appearing in 13 states, including parts of New York near Long Island and New York City.

The insects, known for their loud mating calls, will start emerging in late April in warmer states like Georgia and in May for northern regions.

While cicadas are expected in New York, declining populations and past droughts could limit their numbers.

These periodical cicadas, exclusive to the eastern U.S., spend weeks buzzing, mating, and laying eggs before dying. Observers can log sightings via the Cicada Safari app to aid research efforts.
