  • Staff Report

The New York State United Teachers union has filed to intervene in a legal case challenging the retention of five books in the Clyde-Savannah secondary school library.

The plaintiffs, Rev. Jacob Marchitell and Moms for Liberty, claim the books are pornographic and that the state Education Department infringed on parental rights by allowing them to remain.

According to the Finger Lakes Times, NYSUT argues that overturning the decision could endanger policies supporting academic freedom.

The school librarian, Emilie Bastian, also requested involvement, citing her role in creating the district’s book policy. The court will hear motions, including the district’s request to dismiss the case, on Feb. 14.
