A 56-year-old Penn Yan man has been charged with petit larceny after allegedly attempting to leave a Walmart in Hopewell with unpaid items valued at $98.02, authorities said.
Ontario County Sheriff’s deputies responded to the incident at the Recreation Drive store at 10:06 a.m. Friday. Upon arrival, officers identified Gerard Arthur Shiver Jr., of Brown Street, Penn Yan, as the suspect. According to deputies, Shiver had placed various items in a shopping cart, bypassed all points of sale, and attempted to leave the premises.
Shiver was taken into custody without incident around 10:30 a.m. and subsequently charged with petit larceny. He was released on an appearance ticket and is scheduled to address the charge in court at a later date.
