A second elected official in Waterloo has been charged in connection with a March 25, 2024, break-in at the Waterloo Highway Department. State police announced on Wednesday the arrest of Robert H. Lotz, 40, who serves as a member of the Waterloo Town Board, alongside two other individuals.
Lotz, Waterloo Town Supervisor Don Trout, 40, and Michelle Geraghty, 39, all of Waterloo, have been charged with third-degree burglary, a Class D felony. Authorities allege the three unlawfully entered the highway department at 66 Virginia Street and caused property damage during the incident. All three were arraigned and released on their own recognizance.
State police have not disclosed further details about the nature or extent of the damage caused during the break-in, nor have they commented on how the investigation led to Lotz’s arrest.
Third-degree burglary is defined under New York law as illegal entry into a building with intent to commit a crime. While all three suspects await further legal proceedings, the charges carry significant potential consequences, including the loss of public trust in local leadership.
