Geneva police chief says lower speed limit for South Main St. won’t address safety concerns

  • Staff Report

Geneva Police Chief Ron Eveland recently argued that reducing South Main Street’s speed limit from 30 to 25 mph won’t resolve safety concerns for pedestrians or vehicles.

According to the Finger Lakes Times, he’s advocating for targeted radar enforcement to address moderate speeding and traffic challenges, especially near Hobart and William Smith Colleges.

A recent traffic study showed most drivers adhere to the speed limit, with few exceeding 36 mph. Pedestrian incidents are rare, but parking near crosswalks and heavy tractor-trailer traffic complicate safety.

Officials are exploring solutions like flashing crosswalk beacons, though their high costs pose challenges.
