New York sports betting spend ranks third nationwide, 78% above average

New York is forecast to have one of the highest per-capita sports betting spends in the nation for 2024, according to a new study by crypto casino Gamdom. The analysis projects the Empire State’s per-person sports betting spend at $1,087, 78% above the national average for states with legalized betting. This places New York third overall in the country.

The study used established sports betting figures for the first half of 2024 and applied an ARIMA model to forecast the remaining months, combining historical data and trends to predict total values. New York’s total forecast sports betting handle stands at a staggering $21.28 billion, highlighting its prominence in the growing market.

Nevada, home to Las Vegas, continues to lead the nation, with a per-capita sports betting spend of $1,815—198% above the national average. Its total forecast handle for 2024 is $5.8 billion, reflecting its status as a hub for sports wagering. New Jersey ranks second with a $1,398 per-capita spend and a $12.99 billion total handle, underscoring the state’s strong market presence.

Massachusetts and Arizona complete the top five, with per-capita spends of $1,041 and $929, respectively. The study also identified Maryland, Illinois, and Colorado among the top ten states with robust sports betting markets.

Gamdom’s founder, Felix Römer, noted the remarkable scale of spending in leading states, emphasizing the rapid growth of sports betting in legalized markets. “The figures are generally quite astounding in their scale,” Römer said. “The amount of money wagered in the top few states is certainly a shocking statistic when compared to the average American state where sports betting is legal.”

Nevada’s top position excludes revenue from Las Vegas’s massive casino industry, focusing solely on sports betting. The findings highlight the competitive nature of the U.S. sports betting market and the significant differences in engagement across states.
