  • Staff Report

Dr. Jim Castellanos, an anesthesiology instructor at Weill Cornell Medicine, has been named a 2024 Hanna H. Gray Fellow by the Howard Hughes Medical Institute.

This fellowship provides up to $1.5 million over eight years, supporting his transition from postdoctoral research to an independent faculty role, along with mentoring and professional development.

Castellanos, a Marine Corps veteran and son of Salvadoran immigrants, will study how immune cells and skin stem cells interact to heal wounds, focusing on therapies for critically ill burn patients.

His research builds on his prior work in immunology and aims to uncover innovative treatments. Castellanos credits his military experience with inspiring his medical and scientific career.
