Corning woman arrested on firearm and evidence tampering charges in Steuben County

The New York State Police in Bath have arrested Stephanie N. Short, 36, of Corning, on multiple charges, including felony counts of transporting a firearm and tampering with physical evidence. The charges stem from a June 2024 traffic stop in the village of Savona.

According to authorities, Short was operating a 2006 Toyota 4Runner during the June 23 traffic stop, with passenger Jeramiah P. Mendez, 35, of Naples, NY. Police discovered that Mendez had outstanding warrants, prompting a search of the vehicle. The search uncovered a handgun, live ammunition, and a bag of gun parts.

Short faces charges of Transport of a Firearm (D felony), Tampering with Physical Evidence: Conceal/Destroy (E felony), Criminal Possession of a Firearm (E felony), and Aggravated Unlicensed Operation of a Motor Vehicle 3rd (A misdemeanor).

Mendez was also arrested during the incident and charged with Criminal Possession of a Weapon 3rd (D felony) and Criminal Possession of a Firearm (E felony).

Both individuals are scheduled to appear in Steuben County Court, where the case will proceed.
