NY lawmakers weigh bottle bill overhaul

A push to modernize New York’s bottle redemption system is gaining steam as the legislative session nears its end, according to Spectrum News.

The “Bigger Better Bottle Bill” would expand the types of containers eligible for redemption—like iced teas and sports drinks—and double the deposit from five to ten cents. Advocates argue the changes would boost recycling rates and ease landfill pressure, especially in regions like the Finger Lakes. Supporters also point to higher redemption success in states with similar increases.

Critics, including business leaders and Republican lawmakers, worry the bill raises consumer costs and burdens retailers. They favor alternative funding models that support redemption centers without increasing deposit fees.
