As 2024 draws to a close, the Canandaigua Professional Firefighters I.A.F.F. Local 2098 are reflecting on a demanding year, marked by dedication, sacrifice, and unwavering commitment to protecting their community. Responding to 2,460 calls for service, the firefighters faced a wide range of emergencies, from devastating fires to complex rescues.
The department reported 69 fires, 117 motor vehicle crashes — 72 of which involved injuries and five requiring major extrication — six water emergencies, three high-angle rescues, two confined space rescues, and even one aircraft crash. These figures represent only a portion of the countless emergencies handled throughout the year.
“We care about YOU. We are here for YOU,” the department stated in their annual reflection. “Every call, no matter how big or small, is someone’s worst day, and we will always give 100 percent to ensure the best possible outcome.”
In addition to their emergency response efforts, the firefighters frequently collaborated with local law enforcement agencies, including assisting with marine rescues and confined space standbys. Each incident, whether it involved a child on thin ice, a family member in medical distress, or a homeowner facing a fire emergency, was treated with the same level of professionalism and care.
The department underscored the weight of public expectation, noting that the community relies on them to deliver precision and perfection in every situation. “Do you know how many of those emergencies the community expected perfection on? Every single one of them,” the statement read.
The firefighters also expressed gratitude for the trust and support they’ve received from the Canandaigua community and emphasized their continued commitment to being a dependable resource, available 24/7, 365 days a year.
As they look ahead to 2025, the Canandaigua Professional Firefighters extended a heartfelt wish for safety and health to the community while reinforcing their readiness to respond when called upon.
“We hope that you have a safe and healthy 2025 and that you won’t require our assistance this year, but we are here if you do.”
Residents are encouraged to reach out to the department with any questions or concerns, reaffirming the strong bond between the firefighters and the community they serve.
