Gov. Kathy Hochul called on New York’s Republican congressional delegation to push for a full repeal of the $10,000 cap on state and local tax (SALT) deductions, arguing it costs New Yorkers billions annually.
The SALT cap, implemented in 2018, disproportionately affects high-tax states like New York. With Trump set to return to the White House, negotiations are underway to potentially bundle SALT reform with extending the 2017 tax cuts.
Trump previously vowed to address the SALT cap, and key Republicans, including Reps. Nick LaLota and Mike Lawler, continue advocating for change. The outcome may impact New York’s state budget, due April 1.
