Gov. Kathy Hochul plans to propose funding universal school meals in the state’s upcoming budget, a move estimated to cost $250 million. Currently, only $145 million supports free meals in low-income districts.
State lawmakers, including Assemblymember Jessica González-Rojas and Sen. Michelle Hinchey, have reintroduced legislation for universal meals after a previous attempt stalled. Attorney General Letitia James also supports the initiative, aligning with federal efforts to expand eligibility for free school meals.
Eight states already offer universal free meals, and a national bill proposes free breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snacks for all students. Hochul will present her full agenda in next week’s State of the State address.
