Lake stewards face mounting challenges in preserving cherished lake lifestyles amid rising environmental threats

For generations, lakes have been the heart of cherished family traditions, offering tranquility, recreation, and natural beauty. However, this beloved way of life is increasingly under threat due to eutrophication—an excess of nutrients from fertilizers, septic systems, and stormwater runoff—causing harmful algal blooms (HABs), health hazards, and declining property values.

Homeowners Associations (HOAs) and lake boards bear the responsibility of safeguarding these vital ecosystems. Despite years of financial investments in lake management, reports from the Government Accountability Office (GAO) indicate a continued decline in lake health across the United States.

Lake management efforts often rely on short-term chemical treatments to combat surface-level symptoms like algae overgrowth. However, experts like Dave Shackleton, president of Clean-Flo International, argue these approaches fail to address root causes such as sediment nutrient recycling and hypoxia—oxygen-depleted conditions that can lead to fish kills and toxic algae dominance.

“A holistic, science-based strategy that tackles the underlying causes of eutrophication is the only way to revitalize the entire ecosystem,” Shackleton said.

Effective lake management starts with precise monitoring of key metrics, including dissolved oxygen levels, sediment accumulation, and phytoplankton profiles. Technologies like Rapid Acting Dissolved Oxygen Restoration (RADOR) systems and bio-dredging—using natural enzymes to break down sediment muck—are showing promise in reversing eutrophic conditions and restoring ecological balance.

Transparent reporting is another critical component. Lake management reports, Shackleton emphasized, must present clear, actionable data to help stakeholders understand the impact of their investments.

As lake stewards grapple with these challenges, the emphasis remains on addressing root causes rather than surface symptoms. With science-driven strategies and consistent monitoring, the hope is to preserve the lake lifestyle for future generations while ensuring environmental resilience and long-term sustainability.
