Critics say DEC didn’t fully address health, environmental concerns approving landfill permit renewal

Opponents of the S.A. Dunn Landfill in Rensselaer plan to sue the state Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) over its recent decision to renew the landfill’s operating permits for three years.

Critics, including local officials and environmental groups, argue the DEC failed to fully address health and environmental concerns, especially given the landfill’s proximity to a school. The permits include limits on truck traffic, reduced operating hours, and $150,000 in pollution mitigation funding.

While landfill operators welcomed the renewal, community leaders remain dissatisfied, vowing to pursue legal action to protect residents and address ongoing environmental impacts.
