When will REAL ID’s be required to fly? Soon if you’re planning vacations for 2025

When will REAL ID’s be required to fly? Soon if you’re planning vacations for 2025

Starting May 7, 2025, travelers will need a REAL ID-compliant driver’s license or identification card to board domestic flights.

REAL IDs, introduced after the 9/11 attacks, require proof of legal name, birth date, Social Security number, residency, and two forms of address verification. Compliant IDs feature a star symbol, while non-compliant ones display “Federal Limits Apply.”

To obtain a REAL ID, check with your local DMV for specific documentation requirements. Alternatives, such as a U.S. passport or military ID, will still be accepted for air travel if you don’t have a REAL ID.
