Casella Waste Services, operator of the Ontario County Landfill, is exploring options to secure more soil for landfill cover as it approaches closure in 2028. According to the Finger Lakes Times, one proposal involves excavating deeper on a town-owned 40-acre parcel currently used for soil borrowing.
At a Dec. 17 meeting, Casella GM Brian Sanders discussed the need for increased soil access with the Seneca Town Board. While no action was taken, officials anticipate a decision in early 2025.
The landfill is projected to reach capacity by the end of 2028, and county officials are already planning for alternative waste disposal solutions.
