Wayne County Humane Society gets major funding for new shelter

The Humane Society of Wayne County received a $1.5 million donation from billionaire Tom Golisano and $689,438 from Wayne County’s 2025 budget to build a new animal shelter. This funding, drawn from interest earned on American Rescue Plan Act funds, boosts the shelter’s $4.8 million goal.

Director Mark Plyter highlighted the need for a modern, 9,800-square-foot facility to replace the outdated 1,840-square-foot shelter. The new building will include better noise abatement, disease control, and upgraded adoption and surgery spaces.

With a $500,000 state grant received in 2023, the shelter aims to provide improved care and education for county residents and their pets.
