NYSPHSAA Foundation awards inaugural grants to three schools

The New York State Public High School Athletic Association (NYSPHSAA) Foundation has awarded its first-ever grants to Arlington High School, Vestal High School, and Johnson City High School. Each school will receive up to $1,000 to support innovative programs that enhance student-athlete development and educational opportunities.

“This marks a significant milestone in our mission to support student-athletes and enhance educational opportunities across New York State,” said Gavin Regan, NYSPHSAA Foundation President. “These grants will empower our schools and communities, enabling them to provide the resources and programs that are essential for the success and well-being of our youth.”

Arlington High School (Section I) will use the funds to implement the InSideOut Initiative. The program is designed to train coaches in transformational leadership with a focus on the educational purpose of athletics. The initiative includes character development and leadership lessons for athletes, emphasizing weekly themes to promote growth both on and off the field. The grant will help expand the program’s reach within the school.

Johnson City High School (Section IV) is addressing the shortage of sports officials by teaching students the skills to become certified referees. Sixty students are currently participating in a course using the RefReps program, learning the rules and techniques required for officiating sports like football, basketball, soccer, flag football, and cheerleading. The grant will offset the cost of official certification, paving the way for these students to enter the field.

At Vestal High School (Section IV), the grant will enhance a student-run broadcasting program that live-streams many of the school’s home sports events. Vestal students manage every aspect of the broadcasts, from operating equipment to providing commentary, under the guidance of college graduate mentors and school advisors. The funds will be used to purchase audio equipment to improve the quality of their sports media productions.

The NYSPHSAA Foundation’s grant initiative reflects a commitment to supporting schools as they foster academic and athletic excellence. By funding projects that promote character building, professional development, and career opportunities, the foundation aims to enrich the experiences of student-athletes across New York State.
