The New York State Public High School Athletic Association (NYSPHSAA) concluded its annual Central Committee meeting on July 31 in Riverhead, NY, implementing several key changes. Regional rotations for Girls Team Tennis, Girls Soccer, Boys Soccer, 11-man Football, Field Hockey, and Girls Volleyball will start in fall 2024. The committee approved a return to pool play for the girls’ volleyball state championship. It moves away from the 2023 bracketed format.
Significant rule changes include a new suspension protocol for in-game ejections in football and an overtime shootout for boys’ ice hockey. Bowling will expand to two divisions and a six-player format. The committee also approved a $0.50 increase in ticket prices for championship events, effective this fall.

During the meeting, NYSPHSAA honored outgoing President Julie Bergman and welcomed new leadership, including incoming President Timothy Mullins. The Sportsmanship Stay in the Game award was presented to Section VII for exemplary conduct. It recognizes the region’s commitment to fair play.
