The New York State Public High School Athletic Association (NYSPHSAA) has announced its fall 2024 Scholar-Athlete teams and individual honorees, marking the 33rd year of the program that highlights student-athletes excelling in both academics and sports.
This fall, NYSPHSAA recognized 4,093 teams as Scholar-Athlete teams, an increase from 3,967 teams in fall 2023. To qualify, a team must maintain an average GPA of 90% or higher for at least 75% of its roster. Additionally, 52,547 students received individual recognition for earning an average GPA of 90% or above during the fall season, regardless of whether their team met the criteria.
“Congratulations to the fall teams and student-athletes recognized as Scholar-Athletes,” said NYSPHSAA Executive Director Dr. Robert Zayas. “It is remarkable that over 52,000 student-athletes have excelled academically while dedicating themselves to their fall sports and teammates. NYSPHSAA is proud to celebrate these outstanding achievements.”
Participation in the Scholar-Athlete program also saw growth, with 659 schools — representing 84% of NYSPHSAA membership — submitting teams for consideration. Both the number of teams and individual honorees surpassed the previous year’s figures, reflecting the dedication of New York State’s student-athletes and schools.

The Scholar-Athlete program continues during the winter season, with submissions opening on January 27, 2025, and closing on March 17, 2025. Schools interested in participating can find more information on the NYSPHSAA website.
