A record number of New York State high schools have been honored for their academic achievements in the 2023-2024 school year, the New York State Public High School Athletic Association Inc. (NYSPHSAA) announced. A total of 114 schools earned the prestigious School of Distinction Award, and 226 schools received the School of Excellence Award. These figures mark an increase from the previous year, which saw 84 schools achieve distinction and 219 earn excellence awards.
“The efforts made by student-athletes in the classroom are paramount to their success in the athletic arena, and beyond their high school days,” said NYSPHSAA Executive Director Dr. Robert Zayas. “We are proud of those who put in the work as ‘student’ and ‘athlete,’ as well as the growth in both School of Excellence and Distinction recognition.”
To qualify for these awards, schools must meet rigorous academic standards. The School of Distinction status requires all varsity teams to receive the Scholar-Athlete team award, while the School of Excellence Award mandates 75% of varsity teams qualify. Winning schools will be recognized at their local athletic director workshops this fall.
