Hochul announces federal deployment of drone detection system to New York amid suspicious sightings

  • Staff Report

Governor Kathy Hochul announced that New York State will receive a state-of-the-art drone detection system from federal partners in response to recent suspicious drone sightings across the Northeast. This deployment aims to bolster ongoing investigations and support law enforcement efforts to address potential security threats.

The Biden Administration’s assistance comes after Governor Hochul’s call for increased resources to handle the rising number of drone incidents. However, Hochul emphasized the need for additional legislative action to empower states in tackling such challenges.

“We are grateful to the Biden Administration for their support, but ultimately we need further assistance from Congress,” Hochul said. “Passing the Counter-UAS Authority Security, Safety, and Reauthorization Act will give New York and our peers the authority and resources required to respond to circumstances like we face today.”

The measure would enhance the ability of state and local authorities to mitigate drone-related threats more effectively. Investigations into the recent drone activity are ongoing.
