New York State’s new Mobile ID aims to help businesses tackle identity theft and fake IDs. For David Chappius, co-owner of Roar Rochester, accepting IDs via smartphones is a major step forward, as people are less likely to lose their phones than physical IDs.
However, Chappius expressed concerns about security, questioning whether the system could be tricked by screenshots or another person’s ID. DMV Commissioner Mark J.F. Schroeder assured the Mobile ID system is secure and can’t be faked, with businesses able to trust the verification results.
Users can download the NY Mobile ID app, which uses facial recognition for verification. While the state offers a verifier app for businesses, Mobile ID use remains optional, so carrying a physical ID is still necessary.
