Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez announced she is seeking the lead Democratic position on the House Oversight and Accountability Committee for the next Congress. In a letter to colleagues Friday, the New York lawmaker confirmed her bid following Rep. Jamie Raskin’s decision to pursue a leadership role on the House Judiciary Committee.
Ocasio-Cortez, currently second in line for the role, emphasized the importance of holding future administrations accountable, especially during Donald Trump’s potential second term. She highlighted the need to address corruption while advocating for economic justice and protecting working-class Americans.
The Democratic Steering Committee will soon make leadership recommendations, with Virginia Rep. Jerry Connolly also vying for the position. The current committee chair is Republican Rep. James Comer of Kentucky.
