SIGNING OFF: Veteran journalist Peter Mantius shuts down WaterFront blog

Peter Mantius, a seasoned journalist, local environmental reporter, and FingerLakes1.com contributor announced the closure of his influential WaterFront blog, marking the end of a seven-year effort to spotlight environmental challenges in the Finger Lakes region. The decision comes as he and his wife, Laura, prepare to relocate to Massachusetts to be closer to their children and grandchildren.

Mantius launched WaterFront to address critical environmental issues affecting the region, including toxic cyanobacteria blooms, unregulated agricultural runoff, and landfill operations. His incisive reporting galvanized public awareness, with posts often serving as resources for environmental advocates.

“I regret having to abruptly stop blogging on the politics of the environment,” Mantius wrote. “Our beautiful region needs it, deserves it.”

His departure coincides with mounting concerns over state and federal environmental policies. Mantius criticized the proposed rollback of New York’s climate mandates and raised alarms about potential fracking in the Finger Lakes, pointing to the appointment of Lee Zeldin as head of the federal Environmental Protection Agency. Zeldin, he noted, has voiced support for lifting the state’s fracking ban.

“Even if the state legislature refuses to budge on the fracking ban,” Mantius warned, “the state seems poised to backtrack on enforcing its two signature environmental initiatives.”

The closure of WaterFront leaves a significant gap in environmental watchdog journalism in the Finger Lakes, a region already grappling with challenges like Cayuga Lake’s salt mine operations and the pressures of being a hub for New York’s waste.

Mantius expressed hope that others would continue his work. “A motivated public can be a powerful defense. A passive public invites harmful exploitation,” he stated, underscoring the need for continued vigilance in environmental advocacy.

Before signing off, Mantius thanked the many contributors and supporters of WaterFront. “You know who you are. It’s been a privilege to work with you,” he said, pledging to make past posts accessible to the public even after the blog’s closure.
