The New York State Thruway Authority is rolling out significant safety enhancements ahead of the winter season. Over 250 heavy-duty plow trucks will be equipped with green hazard lights to improve visibility during snow removal operations.
The Authority will also deploy 50 new pieces of snow-fighting equipment, including plow trucks, loaders, and UTVs, to bolster its fleet.
A pilot program will test devices on 50 plows to upload real-time hazard data to apps like Google Maps and Waze, alerting drivers about active snowplows.
These updates come after 75 plow crashes in five years, including 16 last winter. Drivers are urged to follow safety guidelines, staying behind plows traveling at 35 mph to ensure cleared and salted roads.
