President-elect Donald Trump has nominated Dr. Mehmet Oz, a cardiothoracic surgeon and TV personality, to head the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). Announcing the pick on Tuesday, Trump praised Oz’s commitment to improving healthcare, describing him as a leader who will ensure Americans receive top-quality care.
Dr. Oz, best known for The Dr. Oz Show, has long been a prominent figure in health and wellness but has faced criticism for controversial views, including his promotion of hydroxychloroquine during the COVID-19 pandemic.
A 2022 Senate candidate in Pennsylvania with Trump’s endorsement, Oz also served on Trump’s Presidential Council on Sports, Fitness, and Nutrition. If confirmed, Oz will oversee CMS programs covering over 160 million Americans and collaborate with Robert F. Kennedy Jr., Trump’s nominee for Health and Human Services Secretary, to reform the healthcare system.
