Residents near the Seneca Meadows Landfill pushed back against extending its operations for 25 more years, voicing frustration at Tuesday’s Seneca County Board of Supervisors meeting.
The landfill, slated to close next year, may remain open until 2040 if Waste Connections’ permit is approved. Locals criticized the county’s draft solid waste plan for omitting the landfill’s closure.
Attendees described enduring years of odors and called the plan inadequate for meeting state waste management goals.
In October, supervisors urged the DEC to assess health impacts of continued landfill operations. Public comments on the plan are open until November 15, with submissions directed to Jill Henry, Director of Planning and Community Development, via mail or email.
