At a packed town board meeting, most of the 37 speakers urged officials to deny Seneca Meadows Inc. (SMI) a permit to continue operating its landfill on Route 414. Complaints centered on odors, environmental harm, and health risks, with many opposing the proposed landfill expansion.
Critics cited impacts on air, water, and local agriculture, urging the town to prioritize sustainable development over reliance on landfill revenue. Some residents shared personal stories of illness from landfill odors, while others called for better waste management solutions. SMI representatives defended their environmental and safety record, emphasizing the need for collaboration.
The board will vote on the permit and a new host community agreement in March. Meanwhile, a 2016 local law mandates the landfill close by year’s end unless granted an extension.
