Vice President Kamala Harris won New York’s 28 electoral votes on Tuesday, extending the state’s 40-year Democratic streak in presidential races. Yet, with just an 11-point lead over former President Donald Trump, her margin is significantly lower than recent Democratic candidates.
Unofficial results show Harris with 55% of the vote compared to Trump’s 45%, marking the smallest Democratic win in New York since 1988. Analysts attribute this to Harris’s underperformance in traditionally strong Democratic areas, including Queens and the Bronx, and Trump’s gains on Long Island.
Harris’s narrow victory follows closely on the heels of Democratic Gov. Kathy Hochul’s tight reelection in 2022. Also on the ballot, U.S. Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand retained her seat, winning 58% of the vote, slightly outpacing Harris.
