Community advocates with Seneca Lake Guardian will host a meeting on Thursday evening to discuss new air quality monitoring efforts around the Seneca Meadows Landfill. The 6 p.m. event at the Seneca Falls Community Center will unveil an air monitoring program aimed at tracking emissions from the landfill and assessing public health impacts.
The Environmental Health Project (EHP) will provide details on the one-year program, offering residents access to real-time emissions data through an online platform. EHP will also present findings on the health effects linked to landfill emissions, citing common complaints such as headaches and respiratory issues among locals.
The meeting comes as New York’s Department of Environmental Conservation prepares for a public comment period on a requested permit extension that would allow the landfill to remain open until 2040, extending beyond its 2025 closure date and expanding its area by over 40 acres.
