Firefighters stop brush fire threatening hillside home

A quickly spreading brush fire near Enfield Falls Road was stopped just in time by firefighters before it reached a nearby structure on Wednesday morning. The Ithaca Fire Department received reports of an uncontrolled fire climbing a hillside in the area of 272 Enfield Falls Road.

Upon arrival, crews observed flames advancing toward a building. Additional support came from Enfield and Newfield Fire Departments, off-duty Ithaca firefighters, and a team from Bangs Ambulance. After about an hour, the combined efforts brought the fire under control, preventing any injuries or structural damage.

Lt. Robert Shepherd reported that approximately 0.6 acres of forest understory were burned. The fire is believed to have started due to unattended open burning. Officials are reminding the public to exercise caution with open flames to prevent similar incidents.
