Firefighters from multiple departments responded to a house fire and explosion on Stickles Lane in Conquest late-Monday. The explosion, which triggered a full-scale emergency response, left two people injured—one of which had to be airlifted from the scene, according to our partners at the Cayuga-Seneca Fire Wire.
The initial call brought out several fire companies, including those from Port Byron, Montezuma, and Cato, along with ambulance services from Auburn City, Fair Haven, and Lake Shore. Mercy Flight was dispatched to airlift one of the injured victims to a hospital, while a second ambulance transported another individual.
According to reports from Cayuga/Seneca Fire Wire, the house was engulfed in flames when crews arrived, with 90 percent of the structure already collapsed. Firefighters worked quickly to bring the fire under control, employing a “surround and drown” strategy to fully extinguish the blaze.
The cause of the explosion remains under investigation, as firefighters continue to comb through the debris, hitting hot spots to prevent further flare-ups. Multiple tanker trucks shuttled water to the scene, with crews setting up a draft from a nearby boat launch to keep up the firefighting efforts.
All emergency units were cleared from the scene a few hours later. Officials have yet to provide further details on the extent of the injuries or the cause of the explosion, but law enforcement was called to the scene to assist with the investigation.
