In 2023, an estimated 481,544 New Yorkers left the state for new homes across the U.S., with Florida emerging as the top destination. According to U.S. Census Bureau data, 71,138 New Yorkers relocated to the Sunshine State, resulting in a net loss of 46,389 people from New York to Florida after accounting for those who moved back.
Other popular destinations included New Jersey, Pennsylvania, California, and Texas. While New York gained over 300,000 new residents from other states, the overall population saw a net outflow of 178,709. Massachusetts was the state that contributed the most new residents to New York, with a net gain of 4,754.
Florida’s warm climate and contrasting political landscape continue to attract a steady stream of former New Yorkers.
