Livingston County historian named president of Western NY historians’ group

Holly Watson, the Livingston County Historian, has been named the new president of the Government Appointed Historians of Western New York (GAHWNY). Watson, a long-time member of the organization, has served as GAHWNY’s secretary for the past four years and takes the helm as the group marks its 16th year of providing educational programs and resources to historians across the region.

In her new role, Watson looks forward to enhancing her professional development while supporting fellow historians throughout Western New York. “I have enjoyed connecting with historians across our region and sharing ideas during my four years as secretary of GAHWNY,” she said. “As president, I aim to continue supporting my peers, whether they are just starting out or are experienced public officials. It’s a privilege to share my experiences as Livingston County historian and offer guidance to others in the field.”

Since becoming the county historian, Watson has focused on managing and processing the office’s unprocessed collections and updating its comprehensive inventory. She has also expanded the office’s online searchable database by indexing thousands of records. In addition to her archival work, Watson actively engages with the public, recently presenting a series on the history of the Livingston County Poorhouse Cemeteries.

GAHWNY, founded in 2008 by former Livingston County historian Amie Alden, promotes the research, preservation, and interpretation of the history of Western New York. The organization offers annual conferences, networking opportunities, and scholarships for students, along with recognizing the milestones of regional historians.

Watson’s leadership of GAHWNY is expected to strengthen the organization’s efforts in fostering collaboration among historians throughout the region.
