Why did Ithaca shut down its customs facility? Low usage, high cost

Ithaca Tompkins International Airport is closing its customs facility after it generated only $15,000 last year despite costing over $250,000 to operate.

Airport Director Roxan Noble told WSYR-TV that fewer than 30 international flights arrived last year, making the facility financially unsustainable. International travelers will now clear customs elsewhere before flying into Ithaca, which Noble says won’t hinder visitors to Cornell University.

Despite a 23% increase in overall travelers, the airport couldn’t justify the customs facility’s expense. Plans are underway to repurpose the space, with marketing agencies set to present ideas next month.
