The Canandaigua firefighting community is paying tribute to Robert B. Bator, a respected and dedicated firefighter who passed away on September 21 at the age of 77. Bator served the Canandaigua City Fire Department in various roles throughout his career, including fire investigator, municipal training officer, and acting fire chief. He was well known across Ontario County and New York State for his contributions to the fire service.
Born in Rochester on January 10, 1947, Bator was raised in Hopewell, N.Y., and spent his life deeply involved in his community. After graduating from Clifton Springs High School, he pursued studies at Finger Lakes and Monroe Community Colleges. In 1968, he married Theresa Blazys, with whom he shared over 50 years, raising their family on his childhood farm in Hopewell.
Bator’s public service extended beyond his firefighting duties. He served on the Hopewell Town Board and was a life member of the Hopewell Volunteer Fire Department, where he held multiple terms as fire chief. His commitment to helping others was evident not only in his professional work but also in his active involvement with local government and community organizations.

In addition to his firefighting career, Bator worked with a general contractor in Clifton Springs, contributing to the revitalization of various local landmarks, including the Clifton Springs Library and Clifton Springs Hospital. He was also known as “Buffalo Bob” for raising American Bison on a farm in Manchester, a venture that brought him joy and adventure.
Bator is survived by his three children, Bruce, James, and Daria, as well as six grandchildren and a great-grandson. He was predeceased by his wife, Theresa, and his sister, Cathryn.
In lieu of a public service, Bator’s family has asked for donations to be made in his memory to the Ontario County Humane Society, Lollypop Farm, or the Hopewell Volunteer Fire Department. His legacy of service and dedication to his community will be remembered by many.
