Auburn City Council will meet Thursday, October 3, 2024, to address key agenda items including a proclamation for Fire Prevention Week and the approval of a grant application for the rehabilitation of the Lake Avenue Bridge. The meeting will begin at 5 p.m. at Memorial City Hall.
Fire Prevention Week proclamation
Fire Chief Mark Fritz will lead the ceremonial presentation for Fire Prevention Week, scheduled for October 6-12, 2024. This year’s theme, “Smoke Alarms: Make Them Work for You,” emphasizes the importance of working smoke alarms in reducing fire-related injuries and deaths. Mayor James Giannettino, Jr., will officially proclaim the observance, urging Auburn residents to prioritize fire safety in their homes.
Lake Avenue Bridge rehabilitation project
Another significant item on the agenda is the council’s consideration of Resolution #112 of 2024, which would authorize an application for $1 million in federal funding from the Northern Border Regional Commission (NBRC). The funding, part of the NBRC’s Catalyst Program, would contribute to the rehabilitation of the Lake Avenue Bridge, which was built in 1954 and requires extensive upgrades. The total project cost is estimated at $8.3 million, with New York State’s Bridge NY program already committing $3.8 million.
Council members will discuss the funding gap and the city’s plan to meet the $250,000 local match requirement. If approved, the project would begin in 2026, ensuring continued safe passage for the 10,000 daily users of the bridge.
Public participation and other business
The meeting will also include public comment sessions, where residents are encouraged to speak on city matters. The council will review minutes from prior meetings and hear reports from the city manager and council members.
