The Fayette Historical Society is inviting the public to explore the rich history of central Seneca County this fall through a series of programs focused on the life and work of the Rev. Diedrich Willers. Titled “Explore Fayette History,” the series will delve into key events of the late 1830s, including a legal dispute that shook the community and culminated in a courthouse showdown in Ovid.
The first program in the series is set for Tuesday, Oct. 8, from 6:30 to 8 p.m., at the historic Stone Church on Ovid Street. Built 200 years ago, the church served as the pulpit for Willers during his 60-year tenure as pastor, and it was the site of a contentious 1837 Sunday service that sparked community-wide controversy. Attendees will learn about the unique settlement of German immigrants in Fayette, the church’s architecture, and view primary source documents that shed light on Willers’ life and the turbulent events surrounding his ministry.
“This program is a fantastic opportunity for youth and adults alike to immerse themselves in local history,” said Jonathan Monfiletto, a representative of the Fayette Historical Society. “Rev. Willers’ story is one of intrigue, conflict, and devotion to his community, and we’re excited to bring this history to life.”
The series is free and open to all, with no requirement to attend every session to participate. While the program is geared toward younger audiences, history enthusiasts of all ages are encouraged to join.
