A hearing on forming the Odessa Unified Fire District met with resistance as town officials raised concerns, leading to a second meeting next month. The district would serve the Village of Odessa and portions of surrounding towns, replacing the current fire protection service. During the hearing, the Town of Cayuta opted out of the proposal, citing doubts.
The meeting lasted over three hours, with questions about the district’s cost and structure. Odessa Mayor Gerry Messmer warned that without a district, the village’s fire department costs could lead to financial ruin. Despite presentations, officials felt more details were needed.
Attorney Mark Butler, who specializes in fire service issues, promised to provide additional information ahead of the Oct. 16 follow-up hearing. The revised proposal will remove Cayuta and address the concerns voiced by the other town boards, which remain engaged in discussions.
