The Ontario County Board of Supervisors (BOS) has announced a series of community meetings to gather input and discuss the future of the Ontario County landfill. The current lease agreement for the landfill, located in the Town of Seneca, is set to expire on December 31, 2028, prompting discussions about long-term waste management strategies for the county.
The meetings, open to the public, will focus on the findings of the recently completed Landfill Alternatives Analysis Report, prepared by national waste management experts MSW Consultants. This 18-month study examined the county’s current solid waste practices and outlined several potential future scenarios, including the expansion of the existing landfill, siting a new landfill, landfill closure, incineration options, or the development of a transfer station to haul waste to other landfill sites outside of Ontario County.
The Board of Supervisors is encouraging residents to attend these meetings to learn about the potential impacts of these alternatives and to share their perspectives on the best path forward for the county’s waste management needs. BOS Chairman Todd Campbell emphasized the importance of community engagement, stating, “The community meetings and website reflect our desire to keep the community informed about the landfill and decisions regarding its future. We encourage residents to stay engaged as we move forward with decisions about the landfill’s future.”
