Casella Waste Services pays $470,000 fine after DEC action on Ontario County Landfill

Casella Waste Services has paid nearly $500,000 in fines imposed by the state for violating its operating permit.

The final payment was $470,000. Approximately $30,000 was taken off the fine for the company completing programs and steps to remedy the violations.

Casella is paying $220,000 to the state, and $250,000 to an environmental benefit project, officials said.

Officials at Casella say nearly all of the violations have been corrected.

Ontario County and Geneva will split the cost of the $500,000 fine leveled against them.

At this point, Ontario County is considering its options with regard to future operation of the landfill. The Town of Seneca has already voted in support of closure.
