Ontario County residents are being warned about a phone scam where scammers pose as the Ontario County Sheriff’s Office, falsely claiming residents have missed jury duty or a court appearance.
Officials say the scammers then threaten a warrant unless a “fine” is paid, often demanding thousands of dollars via a payment method from Dollar General.
Authorities stress that the Sheriff’s Office will never ask for payment over the phone and urge residents not to provide sensitive information.
If you encounter this scam, contact the Ontario County Sheriff’s Office at (585)-394-4560.
