As the new school year approaches, school districts will implement changes to their lockdown drill procedures by notifying parents one week before each scheduled drill.
The change comes in response to parental requests for better communication about emergency preparedness, according to the New York State Board of Regents. Wayne County Sheriff Rob Milby tells News10NBC the drills are essential, noting that they help prepare students for potential emergencies.
Schools are required to conduct four lockdown drills annually, with law enforcement agencies running separate re-enactment scenarios during the summer.
This year, schools are introducing a new communication system developed by Tap App and 4D-Scape, which provides real-time access to security cameras for dispatchers. The system allows immediate communication and electronic access to buildings during emergencies.
