New traffic gates along the Thruway intended to boost winter safety across FLX and CNY

Summer travelers on the New York State Thruway may have noticed new traffic gates at several exits. These “Emergency Ramp Control Gates” are designed to aid snow plows during the winter months by preventing traffic from entering the roadway, allowing maintenance workers and State Police to focus on snow and ice response and emergency incidents.

First installed in Western New York in 2011, more gates were added last year, with ongoing installations at interchanges in the Central New York region. The nearest gate to Rochester is located at Exit 44, leading to Canandaigua and Victor.

The Thruway Authority emphasizes that these gates will not be operational during the summer, ensuring they do not disrupt the flow of traffic during peak travel seasons.
