Leaders across New York state denounced political violence following the attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, on Saturday night. Trump, who was shot in the ear, is safe after the Secret Service neutralized the shooter, Thomas Matthew Crooks, 20, of Bethel Park, Pa.
Mayor Eric Adams, Rev. Al Sharpton, and other leaders met Sunday to discuss the attack. Sharpton emphasized the need to end political violence, saying, “We must have a nation that celebrates the diversity of our views.” Adams urged healing, noting that the shooter’s actions were unacceptable.
Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, Gov. Kathy Hochul, and other officials also expressed their horror and called for unity. Plans are underway to enhance Secret Service protection for presidential candidates to prevent further violence.
