Two Officers Injured in Cayuga Correctional Facility Incident

  • / Updated:
  • Staff Report

Two officers at Cayuga Correctional Facility were injured by an inmate earlier this month, according to the New York State Correctional Officers and Police Benevolent Association. The incident occurred on June 1 as the inmate was returning from a rehabilitation program.

The inmate refused orders to move from a stairwell landing and attacked the supervising officer, punching him in the eye. The officer subdued the inmate with help from two other officers. While being placed in a hold pen, the inmate kicked another officer in the leg before being fully restrained.

Both injured officers sustained minor injuries and were treated on-site. The inmate, serving a 12-year sentence for attempted murder, became compliant after being restrained. The union attributes a rise in staff assaults to overcrowding from recent state prison closures.
